Generic Name: flurbiprofen (FLURE bih proe fin) Brand Names: Ansaid
Take Ansaid tablets by mouth. To lessen stomach upset, take Ansaid tablets with food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water; take tablets in an upright or sitting position. Taking a sip of water first, before taking the tablets, may help you swallow them. If possible take bedtime doses at least 10 minutes before lying down. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Ansaid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ansaid is used to relieve some symptoms caused by arthritis (rheumatism) such as inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. Ansaid is also used to treat other conditions associated with inflammation and/or pain (e.g., menstrual cramps, muscular pain). Generic Ansaid tablets are available.  You should have frequent checkups with your doctor if you take Ansaid regularly. Ulcers or internal bleeding can occur without warning. Symptoms of a Ansaid overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, seizures, sweating, numbness or tingling, little or no urine production, and slow breathing. Let your prescriber or health care professional know if your pain or swelling continues. Do not take Ansaid with other pain-killers or antiinflammatory drugs without advice. |

If you are taking Ansaid on a regular schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose. If you are taking Ansaid as needed, take the missed dose if it is needed, then wait the recommended or prescribed amount of time before taking another dose. Side effects cannot be anticipated. Less common or rare side effects may include: Altered sense of smell, anemia, anxiety, asthma, blood in the urine, bloody diarrhea, bruising, chills and fever, confusion, conjunctivitis (pinkeye), constipation, depression, dizziness, feeling of illness, gas, heart failure, hepatitis, high blood pressure, hives, inflammation of the nose or mouth, inflammation of the stomach, insomnia, itching, kidney failure, lack of coordination, memory loss, nervousness, nosebleed, peptic ulcer, pins and needles, rash, ringing in the ears, sensitivity of skin to light, severe allergic reaction, skin inflammation with or without sores and crusting, sleepiness, stomach and intestinal bleeding, swelling of throat, tremor, twitching, vision changes, vomiting, vomiting blood, weakness, weight changes, welts, yellow eyes and skin. This drug should be used with caution if you have kidney or liver disease. Kidney problems are most likely to develop in such people, as well as in those with heart failure, those taking water pills, and older adults. If you have asthma, take Ansaid with extra caution. Do not take aspirin or similar drugs while taking Ansaid, unless your doctor tells you to do so. Ansaid can cause vision problems. If you experience a change in your vision, inform your doctor. Blurred and/or decreased vision has occurred while taking this medication. Ansaid slows the clotting process. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, this drug should be taken with caution. This drug can increase water retention. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, use with caution. If you want to take Ansaid for pain less serious than that of arthritis, be sure to discuss the risks of using this drug with your doctor. Keep Ansaid in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Before taking Ansaid, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: aspirin or another salicylate (form of aspirin) such as salsalate (Disalcid), diflunisal (Dolobid), choline salicylate-magnesium salicylate (Trilisate, Tricosal, others), and magnesium salicylate (Doan's, others); another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), fenoprofen (Nalfon), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT), ketorolac (Toradol), meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox, others), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), or tolmetin (Tolectin); an over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, or pain medicine that contains aspirin, ibuprofen, Ansaid, or ketoprofen; an anticoagulant (blood thinner) such as warfarin (Coumadin); a steroid such as prednisone (Deltasone); insulin or an oral diabetes medicine such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase), and others; probenecid (Benemid); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others); bismuth subsalicylate in drugs such as Pepto-Bismol. You may not be able to take Ansaid, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Ansaid. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
