Generic Name: leflunomide (oral) (leh FLEW no mide) Brand Names: Arava
Arava comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day. You will need to take a larger dose for the first 3 days of treatment. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Arava exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Arava affects the immune system and decreases inflammation. Arava is used to reduce the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, reduce damage to the joints caused by rheumatoid arthritis, and to improve physical function in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Arava may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.  Pregnant women and women of childbearing age who are not using a reliable method of birth control should not take Arava. Pregnancy must be avoided during treatment and for 2 years after treatment with Arava. If your period is late or you miss a period during treatment with Arava, call your doctor immediately. Talk to your doctor if you plan to become pregnant after stopping treatment with Arava. Your doctor can prescribe a treatment that will decrease the risk of harm to the fetus. |

Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Before taking Arava, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite, LoCHOLEST); methotrexate (Rheumatrex); rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane). You may not be able to take Arava, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Arava.
