Generic Name: anastrozole (ah NA stra zole) Brand Names: Arimidex
Take Arimidex tablets by mouth at the same time each day with or without food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice. Arimidex blocks the production of the hormone estrogen. Some types of breast cancer depend on estrogen to grow, and Arimidex can stop tumor growth by blocking estrogen production. Arimidex is for the treatment of breast cancer in postmenopausal women only. Generic Arimidex tablets are not yet available.  Arimidex, like many other anticancer medications, may prolong survival and improve quality of life. To keep this medication working properly, it's important to continue taking it even when you don't feel well. If you develop bothersome side effects, call your doctor. He or she can recommend ways to reduce your discomfort. Before taking Arimidex, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or if you take other medications. You may not be able to take Arimidex, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. |

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Less common or rare side effects may include: Accidental injury, anxiety, blood clots, breast pain, bronchitis, confusion, drowsiness, feeling of illness, fever, flu-like symptoms, fractures, hair thinning, heart attack, high blood pressure, increased appetite, infection, insomnia, itching, joint pain, muscle pain, nasal or sinus inflammation, neck pain, nervousness, severe blisters in the mouth or other mucous membranes, sluggishness, stroke, sweating, temporary tumor growth, tense muscles, urinary tract infection, vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness, weight loss. Arimidex is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that Arimidex is known to harm an unborn baby. Do not take Arimidex if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Arimidex passes into breast milk. Do not take Arimidex if you are breast-feeding a baby. There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activities while taking Arimidex unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Keep Arimidex in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Anastrozole did not inhibit P450 2A6 or the polymorphic P450 2D6 in human liver microsomes. Anastrozole did not alter the pharmacokinetics of antipyrine. Although there have been no formal interaction studies other than with antipyrine, based on these in vivo and in vitro studies, it is unlikely that co-administration of a 1 mg dose of ARIMIDEX with other drugs will result in clinically significant drug inhibition of cytochrome P450-mediated metabolism of the other drugs.
