Generic Name: caffeine (cah FEEN and er GOH tah meen) Brand Names: Cafatine, Cafergot, Cafetrate, Ercaf, Migergot, Wigraine
Take caffeine in powder or tablet form only as directed. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than directed. Taking too much of this medicine may increase the chance of side effects. It may also become habit-forming. For patients taking the powder form of this medicine: Each packet contains one dose of medicine. The contents of the packet may be stirred into water or other liquid and drunk. Or, the powder may be placed on the tongue and washed down with water or other liquid drink. For patients taking the oral solution form of this medicine: Throw away any unused portion of the medicine left in the single-use vial (bottle). Follow the manufacturer's instruction for use. Caffeine both cause vasoconstriction (narrowing) of arteries and veins that supply blood to the head. Caffeine is used to prevent and to treat vascular headaches such as migraine and migraine-like headaches. Caffeine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. ![]() Some medications may increase the risk of dangerously decreased blood flow to the brain, heart, or extremities when taken with Caffeine. In rare but severe cases, gangrene or other serious problems can result. Some, but not all, of these medications are listed below in the section "What other drugs will affect Caffeine?". Do not take any other medications during treatment with Caffeine without first talking to your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes, chest pain, weakness of the legs, muscle pain in the arms or legs, pain in the chest, changes in heart rate, swelling or itching. |

Do not take a double dose of this medication. Do not use Caffeine products regularly to make up for lost sleep. Do not increase the dose if tolerance develops; your body will not develop a tolerance to the harmful side effects of Caffeine. See your prescriber or health care professional if you continue to experience tiredness or constant sleepiness; this may indicate a problem needing medical attention. Do not take Caffeine close to bedtime. It may prevent you from sleeping. If you have been a regular Caffeine user you can get withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking Caffeine. Symptoms include tiredness, dizziness, headache, anxiety, or nervousness. This can be a weekend effect for people who drink a lot of coffee during their working week. If you are taking Caffeine as a part of a medical treatment, avoid food and drinks that contain additional Caffeine, like coffee, tea, colas and chocolate. Do not take Caffeine with other non-prescription medicines, especially cold and allergy medicines, without asking your prescriber or health care professional for advice. Do not take Caffeine with grapefruit juice, this can increase the effects of Caffeine. Keep Caffeine in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Nasal; another migraine headache medicine such as almotriptan (Axert), sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), rizatriptan (Maxalt), or naratriptan (Amerge)--these medicines must not be taken within 24 hours of a dose of Caffeine; a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), sertraline (Zoloft), or paroxetine (Paxil); a beta-blocker (which are used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, and other heart conditions) such as carteolol (Cartrol), carvedilol (Coreg), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), nadolol (Corgard), pindolol (Visken), propranolol (Inderal), sotalol (Betapace), or timolol (Blocadren); an HIV/ AIDS medicine such as amprenavir (Agenerase), delavirdine (Rescriptor), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), nevirapine (Viramune), ritonavir (Norvir), or saquinavir (Invirase, Fortovase); the antibiotics erythromycin (Ery-Tab, E.E.S., E-Mycin, Eryc, others) or clarithromycin (Biaxin); the antifungals medicines itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral); nefazodone (Serzone); cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB); sibutramine (Meridia). The use of Caffeine may be dangerous if you are taking any of the drugs listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Caffeine.
