    Generic Name: etodolac (eh toe DOE lak) Brand Names: Lodine, Lodine XL
Etodolac is the International Nonproprietary Name(INN) of 1,8-diethyl-1,3,4,9-tetrahydropyrano-[3,4-b]indole-1-acetic acid (empirical formula C17H21NO3), also sold under the trade name Lodine. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to treat pain associated with arthritis and other conditions.

  •  Lodine Directions
    Take Lodine tablets or capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow tablets or capsules whole with a full glass of water; take tablets or capsules in an upright or sitting position. Taking a sip of water first, before taking the tablets or capsules, may help you swallow them. If possible take bedtime doses at least 10 minutes before lying down. Lodine may be taken with food to help decrease stomach upset. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

    Lodine is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID). It relieves mild to moderate pain and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Generic Lodine tablets or capsules are available.

  •  You Should Know Also About Lodine
    Before taking Lodine, tell your doctor if you: have an allergy to aspirin or any other NSAIDs; have an ulcer or bleeding in the stomach; drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day; have liver or kidney disease; have a coagulation (bleeding) disorder; have congestive heart failure; have fluid retention; have heart disease; have high blood pressure. You may not be able to take Lodine, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.

  •  Lodine Missed Dose
    If you are taking Lodine on a regular schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose. If you are taking Lodine as needed, take the missed dose if it is needed, then wait the recommended or prescribed amount of time before taking another dose.

  •  Lodine Side Effects
    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Lodine. More common side effects may include: Abdominal pain, black stools, blurred vision, chills, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, fever, gas, increased frequency of urination, indigestion, itching, nausea, nervousness, rash, ringing in ears, painful or difficult urination, vomiting, weakness. Less common or rare side effects may include: Abdominal bleeding, abnormal intolerance of light, anemia, asthma, blood disorders, congestive heart failure, dry mouth, fainting, flushing, hepatitis and other liver problems, high blood pressure, high blood sugar in some diabetics, hives, inability to sleep, inflamed blood vessels, inflammation of mouth or upper intestine, kidney problems, including kidney failure, loss of appetite, peptic ulcer, rapid heartbeat, rash, severe allergic reactions, skin disorders including increased pigmentation, sleepiness, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (peeling skin), sweating, swelling (fluid retention), thirst, visual disturbances, yellowed skin and eyes.

  •  Lodine Warnings
    Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Lodine may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable. Avoid alcohol or use it with moderation. If you drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day, Lodine may increase the risk of dangerous stomach bleeding. Talk to your doctor before taking Lodine if you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day. Many over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, and pain medicines contain aspirin or other medicines similar to Lodine (such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and others). Before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicine, talk to your doctor and pharmacist.

  •  Lodine Storage
    Keep Lodine in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

  •  Lodine Drug Interactions
    Before taking Lodine, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: aspirin or another salicylate (form of aspirin) such as salsalate (Disalcid), diflunisal (Dolobid), choline salicylate-magnesium salicylate (Trilisate, Tricosal, others), and magnesium salicylate (Doan's, others); another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), fenoprofen (Nalfon), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT), ketorolac (Toradol), meloxicam (Mobic), nabumetone (Relafen), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox, others), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), or tolmetin (Tolectin); an over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, or pain medicine that contains aspirin, ibuprofen, Lodine, or ketoprofen; an anticoagulant (blood thinner) such as warfarin (Coumadin); a steroid such as prednisone (Deltasone); insulin or an oral diabetes medicine such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase), and others; probenecid (Benemid); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others); bismuth subsalicylate in drugs such as Pepto-Bismol. You may not be able to take Lodine, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Lodine. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
