Nabumetone
Nabumetone (na BYOO meh tone) Brand Names: Relafen Relafen is in a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Relafen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Relafen is used to reduce the pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Relafen may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Take nabumetone tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water; take tablets in an upright or sitting position. Taking a sip of water first, before taking the tablets, may help you swallow them. If possible take bedtime doses at least 10 minutes before lying down. You can take nabumetone with food to prevent stomach upset. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. NABUMETONE is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It helps relieve pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Generic nabumetone tablets are available.  Take Relafen with food, milk, or an antacid to lessen stomach upset. Remaining upright (sitting or standing) for 15 to 30 minutes after each dose may prevent irritation of the esophagus (throat). If you drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day, Relafen may increase the risk of stomach bleeding. |

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of this medication. Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine whether it is safe for you to continue taking Relafen. More common side effects may include: Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fluid retention, gas, headache, indigestion, itching, nausea, rash, ringing in ears. Less common side effects may include: Dry mouth, fatigue, inability to fall or stay asleep, increased sweating, inflammation of the mouth, inflammation of the stomach, nervousness, sleepiness, vomiting. Rare side effects may include: Agitation, anxiety, confusion, bloody stools, depression, difficult or labored breathing, difficulty swallowing, fluid retention, general feeling of illness, hives, increase or loss of appetite, kidney failure, large blisters, liver failure, pins and needles, pneumonia or lung inflammation, sensitivity to light, severe allergic reactions, skin peeling, stomach and intestinal inflammation and/or bleeding, tremor, ulcers, vaginal bleeding, vertigo, vision changes, weakness, weight gain, yellow eyes and skin. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Nabumetone may increase the sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable. Avoid alcohol or use it with moderation. If you drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day, nabumetone may increase the risk of dangerous stomach bleeding. Talk to your doctor before taking nabumetone if you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day. Many over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, and pain medicines contain aspirin or other medicines similar to nabumetone (such as ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and others). Before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicine, talk to your doctor and pharmacist. Keep Nabumetone in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Before taking nabumetone, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs: aspirin or another salicylate (form of aspirin) such as salsalate (Disalcid), diflunisal (Dolobid), choline salicylate-magnesium salicylate (Trilisate, Tricosal, others), and magnesium salicylate (Doan's, others); another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as nabumetone (Cataflam, Voltaren), etodolac (Lodine), fenoprofen (Nalfon), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT), ketorolac (Toradol), meloxicam (Mobic), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox, others), oxaprozin (Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), or tolmetin (Tolectin); an over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, or pain medicine that contains aspirin, ibuprofen, nabumetone, or ketoprofen; an anticoagulant (blood thinner) such as warfarin (Coumadin); a steroid such as prednisone (Deltasone); insulin or an oral diabetes medicine such as glipizide (Glucotrol), glyburide (Diabeta, Micronase), and others; probenecid (Benemid); lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, others); bismuth subsalicylate in drugs such as Pepto-Bismol. You may not be able to take nabumetone, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with nabumetone. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
