Generic Name: tamoxifen (ta MOX i fen) Brand Names: Nolvadex Nolvadex is an oral selective estrogen receptor modulator which is used in breast cancer treatment, and is currently the world's largest selling breast cancer treatment. It is used for the treatment of early and advanced breast cancer in pre- and post-menopausal women. It is also approved by the FDA for the reduction of the incidence of breast cancer in women at high risk of developing the disease. It has been further approved for the reduction of contralateral (in the opposite breast) breast cancer.
Take Nolvadex exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. Nolvadex can be taken with or without food. It is important to take Nolvadex regularly to get the most benefit. Your doctor may want you to have breast exams (or to perform self breast exams), mammograms, blood tests, or other medical evaluations during treatment with Nolvadex to monitor progress and side effects. Store Nolvadex at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Nolvadex blocks the actions of the hormone estrogen. Certain types of breast cancer require estrogen to grow. Nolvadex is used to treat and prevent some types of breast cancer that require estrogen to grow. Nolvadex may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide ![]() Nolvadex, an anticancer drug, is given to treat breast cancer. It also has proved effective when cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Nolvadex is most effective in stopping the kind of breast cancer that thrives on estrogen. Nolvadex is also prescribed to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer following surgery and radiation therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ. The drug can also be used to reduce the odds of breast cancer in women at high risk of developing the disease. It does not completely eliminate your chances, but in a five-year study of over 1,500 high-risk women, it slashed the number of cases by 44 percent. |

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of this medication. Side effects from Nolvadex are usually mild and rarely require the drug to be stopped. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Nolvadex. More common side effects may include: Hot flashes, nausea, vomiting. Less common side effects may include: Bone pain, diarrhea, menstrual irregularities, skin rash, tumor pain, vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge Rare side effects may include: Blood clots, depression, distaste for food, dizziness, hair thinning or partial loss, headache, light-headedness, liver disorders, swelling of arms or legs, vaginal itching or dryness, visual problems. You may not be able to take Nolvadex, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment. Nolvadex is in the FDA pregnancy category D. This means that Nolvadex is known to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Nolvadex without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during or for two months following treatment. Effective nonhormonal contraception (birth control) should be used during and for two months following treatment with Nolvadex. It is not known whether Nolvadex passes into breast milk. Do not take Nolvadex without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Keep Nolvadex in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication. Before taking Nolvadex, tell your doctor if you are taking: an estrogen such as Premarin, Ogen, Estratest, Estraderm, Vivelle, Climara, and others; a birth control pill that contains estrogen; warfarin (Coumadin) or another blood thinner; bromocriptine (Parlodel). You may not be able to take Nolvadex or you may require special monitoring or a dosage adjustment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Nolvadex. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including herbal products.
