  •  Plaquenil Directions
    Take Plaquenil tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow tablets with a drink of water. If Plaquenil upsets your stomach take it with food or milk. If you are taking Plaquenil to treat arthritis or lupus erythematosus you will need to take daily doses for several weeks. If you are taking Plaquenil to prevent malaria, you should start taking it two weeks before entering the endemic area, and continue for 8 weeks after leaving. If you are treating an acute attack of malaria you will need treatment for several days. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

  •  Plaquenil Uses
    Plaquenil helps to relieve swelling, stiffness and joint pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis. It is effective in controlling the symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus. Plaquenil is also sometimes used to suppress and treat acute attacks of malaria. Generic Plaquenil tablets are available.



  •  Plaquenil Side Effects
    Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Plaquenil. Side effects of treatment for an acute malarial attack may include: Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, heart problems, lack or loss of appetite, mild headache, nausea, vomiting Side effects of treatment for lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis may include: Abdominal cramps, abnormal eye pigmentation, acne, anemia, bleaching of hair, blind spots, blisters in mouth and eyes, blood disorders, blurred vision, convulsions, decreased vision, diarrhea, difficulty focusing the eyes, diminished reflexes, dizziness, emotional changes, excessive coloring of the skin, eye muscle paralysis, "foggy vision," halos around lights, headache, hearing loss, heart problems, hives, involuntary eyeball movement, irritability, itching, light flashes and streaks, light intolerance, liver problems or failure, loss of hair, loss or lack of appetite, muscle paralysis, muscle weakness and wasting, nausea, nervousness, nightmares, psoriasis (dry, scaly, red skin patches), reading difficulties, ringing in the ears, skin eruptions, skin inflammation and scaling, skin rash, vertigo, vomiting, weariness, weight loss.

  •  Plaquenil Missed Dose
    Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and only take your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

  •  You Should Also Know About Plaquenil
    Children are especially sensitive to Plaquenil. Relatively small doses of this medication have caused fatalities. Keep this drug in a child-proof container and out of the reach of children.

  •  Plaquenil Warnings
    Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you havehad an allergic reaction to previous Plaquenil therapy,glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency,ever had eye damage or visual changes due to Plaquenil or chloroquine (Aralen),psoriasis,porphyria, orliver disease. You may not be able to take Plaquenil, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during your therapy if you have any of the conditions listed above. It is not known whether Plaquenil will harm an unborn baby. Do not take Plaquenil without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known how Plaquenil will affect a nursing infant. Do not take Plaquenil without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

    Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

    Before taking Plaquenil, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:a gold compound such as aurothioglucose (Solganal), auranofin (Ridaura), or gold sodium thiomalate (Aurolate, Myochrysine);digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps); ormethotrexate (Rheumatrex, Folex). You may not be able to take Plaquenil, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during your therapy if you are taking any of the medications listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Plaquenil. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
